What a fantastic week we’ve had in Year 5! We’ve been very busy with exciting activities, creative projects, and plenty of learning along the way.
To begin with, each of the children planted their very own sunflower seeds this week as we prepare to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day on the 21st of March. Across school, we are participating in ‘The Sunflower Challenge’. Just like sunflowers, every child grows and blooms uniquely. This challenge for Nurseries and Primary Schools serves as a beautiful metaphor for the diversity and individuality that makes each child special. You can find out more about this here: https://downsyndromeuk.my.site.com/community/s/the-sunflower-challenge
In science, our investigations into water resistance made quite a splash! The students worked in small groups and put their marine engineering hats on as we explored the question, “How does the shape of an object affect the speed it travels through water?” There were lots of insightful discussions, testing, and observations as we tested various shapes and drew our conclusions. It’s safe to say we have some budding scientists in our midst!
In Design Technology, the children created their own Viking themed toys featuring cam mechanisms. There was plenty of perseverance as they worked on joining wood, drilling holes, and assembling their creations. It was so rewarding to see their hard work and determination pay off as their toys began to take shape.
World Book Day on Thursday was a roaring success! The creativity and enthusiasm from the children were on full display. We made monster bookmarks, explored illustrations in the style of Quentin Blake, and were treated to an author visit from Alex Winstanley, who shared inspiring stories and words of encouragement. The costumes were absolutely brilliant—whether the children came dressed as their favorite book characters, wore cosy clothes to represent comfort, or embraced the challenge of dressing as a word or color, everyone brought their A-game!
On Friday, we had an incredible time when we returned to Forest School. The children loved exploring the forest area in the fresh air and it was a perfect way to round off our week.
As always, we are so proud of the effort and enthusiasm the children put into everything they do. Thank you for all your support at home—particularly with World Book Day costumes!
Homework this week is a Viking Learning Postcard, as well as spellings and times tables practice.
Have a wonderful weekend, and we can’t wait to see what next week brings!
