We have had five busy days in Year 5 this week, with lots of hard work and new learning taking place. Here's a summary of some of our learning from this week:

Maths We have completed our current unit of work on division this week, and worked hard to solve some multiplication and division word problems. We will start to look at our next topic, Fractions, on Monday.

English In English, we have continued to explore our class text, Tony Bradman's 'Viking Boy' and the children have written some absolutely amazing flashbacks as Gunnar, the main character of the story. Using evidence from the text, we have also been able to answer a variety of questions, showcasing our skimming, scanning and comprehension skills.

Design Technology Our DT session this week was very exciting! This lesson involved us measuring wood, cutting wood with junior hacksaws, and using bench hooks to secure the wood safely on the tables. We learnt not just the techniques, but also the importance of using these tools correctly and safely. We then used these skills to jin our materials to create a string, stable corner. There was lots of teamwork, patience and resilience shown in this lesson!

Science We carried out a fun science investigation into air resistance this week. Using paper spinners, we tested whether a shorter propellor length falls to the ground faster or slower than a propellor with longer wings. We concluded that a propellor with a larger surface area experiences more air resistance, and falls to the ground more slowly than a propellor with a smaller surface area. We were able to apply our newly learnt mathematical skills to calculate averages using the bus stop method of division and we worked brilliantly in teams during this lesson.

Times Tables This week, we focused on our 7, 8, and 9 times tables, working hard to master them as well as their related division facts. We have been trying out some different ways of learning our tables and we have enjoyed playing Times Tables Tennis! We are fortunate to each have our own brand new times tables workbook, these will be a fantastic resource to help us improve even further. Keep practising, everyone!

Celebrations and Achievements A big round of applause to our Reading Certificate winner, our Star of the Week, and our Times Tables certificate winner. Not forgetting Dojo winner this week! We are proud of you all!

Thank you to everyone for your enthusiasm and efforts this week. Have a lovely weekend and we look forward to seeing you all on Monday!
