We’ve had an eventful and engaging week in Year 1, filled with new learning experiences and exciting activities. Here’s a snapshot of what your children have been up to in their subjects:

English: Meerkat Mail 🦊 This week in English, we have been continuing to read and discuss the delightful book "Meerkat Mail" by Emily Gravett. The children have explored the adventures of Sunny the meerkat and discussed why Sunny is feeling unhappy at later points in the story. We’ve talked about his longing for a sense of belonging and his journey to find the perfect place to call home. The story has sparked thoughtful conversations and helped the children understand the themes of family, friendship, and self-discovery.

Maths: Comparing Numbers Within 20 - In Maths, we’ve been focusing on comparing numbers within 20. The children have been practising their skills in identifying greater than, less than, and equal to. They have enjoyed hands-on activities and games that make learning fun and interactive.

Geography: Comparing the Kalahari Desert to Standish, Wigan 🌍 - Our Geography lessons have taken us on a journey from the sandy dunes of the Kalahari Desert to our very own Standish in Wigan. The children have been comparing the two locations, discussing the differences in climate, landscape, and animals. They have learned about the unique features of the desert environment and contrasted it with their familiar surroundings.

DT: Using Utensils to Cut Fruit Safely 🍎, safety first! The children have been learning how to use utensils to cut fruit safely. They’ve been practicing their skills with great enthusiasm, understanding the importance of handling tools with care.

Science: Exploring Winter ❄️ We’ve continued our exploration of winter in Science. The children have been observing the changes in the weather, the behaviour of animals, and the adaptations plants and animals make to survive the cold season. They have been curious and engaged, making observations and asking thoughtful questions about the natural world around them.

RE: Environmental Issues and Islamic Teachings 🌱 Our RE lessons have focused on environmental issues and the Islamic teachings related to caring for the environment. The children have been learning about the importance of looking after our planet and the values of stewardship and respect for nature in Islam.

Computing: Different Parts of a Computer 💻 In Computing, the children have been getting to know the different parts of a computer. They have been learning about the roles of each component, from the monitor to the keyboard, and understanding how these parts work together to create a functional computer. Their curiosity and interest in technology are growing day by day.

It’s been a week full of learning and excitement. We’re proud of the enthusiasm and hard work the children have shown in all their subjects. Thank you for your continued support and engagement in your child’s learning journey.

Best regards, The Year 1 Teaching Team 📚✨
