It’s been another exciting week in Year 6! Here’s a quick roundup of what we’ve been up to:
Maths:
We’ve finished our unit on fractions, decimals, and percentages, with the children mastering conversions and solving percentage problems. This has been a focus for a couple of weeks now and it's fantastic to see the amount of progress that's been made. Next week, we’ll be starting our shape unit, covering key Year 6 objectives such as identifying properties of 2D and 3D shapes, calculating area and perimeter, and working with angles.

English:
This week, we’ve read chapters 8 to 14 of Darwin’s Dragons. We've began to explore the Galápagos Islands with Syms as he is working to not only survive, but uncover the secrets of the creatures that live there and some unusual new characters! The children have been enjoying the suspense and exploring the themes of survival and discovery. They’ve also been retelling key moments from the story in their own words, producing some amazing pieces of work that we look forward to sharing with you at parent's evening next week.

Art:
In art, we’ve continued our Lowry unit, experimenting with watercolours. The children focused on using a limited colour palette to create a seascape, before beginning to link this style with their “matchstick men” figures. Their watercolour skills are really coming along, and they’ve done a great job reflecting Lowry’s style.

Class Trip – Wigan Life Museum:
Our trip to the Wigan Life Museum was a hit! We explored the Black Diamond exhibit, learning about Wigan’s coal mining history. The children were fascinated by the mining tools and artifacts, and it was a great way to connect what we’ve learned in class with real-world history.
