This week we began our new topic, ‘Light and Dark’. The children have loved exploring shadows and have made shadow animals with their hands; and explored the shadows created by different objects. They made their own shadow puppets and have been retelling some of the stories they are familiar with as well as creating their own.
In English we have focused our learning around Peace at Last by Jill Murphy. After looking at Mr and Mrs Bear’s garden at night we found out about other nocturnal animals. We introduced the words ‘nocturnal’ and ‘diurnal’ I was very impressed when one of the children told us about ‘crepuscular’ animals which are most active during twilight hours – well done!
In phonics this week we have continued with the Unit 3 sounds b, c, g, h. Learning more sounds has enabled the children to attempt to write more words and it has been lovely to see them beginning to label things independently. Indeed ‘schools’ has been a popular game this week – it has been lovely to see the children rehearsing skills in their play. I’m pretty sure some of them would love to take over and give me a rest!
In RE the children continued to learn about special celebrations. They have focused on Eid for the last couple of weeks. This week Mrs Johns brought some dates for the children to try, which are popular to share with friends and family after the month of Ramadan.
Congratulations to our Star of the Week and Dojo winners.
Have a wonderful half term – get lots of rest as the run up to Christmas is always very busy! It has been a joy getting to know all the children and I can’t wait to see them all back after the holidays.
