Year 1 have had a fantastic week diving into various subjects and making incredible discoveries.

In our English lessons, we are continuing to read "Meerkat Mail" by Emily Gravett. Sunny the meerkat went on an adventurous journey, and the children wrote about how they would pack his suitcase with all the essentials he might need. From sunscreen to snacks, the children thought of everything Sunny would need to stay safe and comfortable. The children shared their ideas and explained why each item was important for Sunny's trip.

In Maths, the children have continued to explore place value within 20 using base 10 and ones. We learned how numbers are made up and practiced building and breaking them down. The children enjoyed using the blocks to visualise:

  • 11 as 1 ten and 1 one.
  • 15 as 1 ten and 5 ones.

It was a fun and interactive way to grasp the concept of place value.

Our Geography lessons took us to the extreme ends of the Earth - the North Pole and the South Pole. We learned about the unique environments of these polar regions and the animals that live there.

In Science, we explored the different seasons and the months that belong to each. We discussed how the weather changes throughout the year and how these changes affect plants, animals, and our daily lives. The children learned:

  • Spring: March, April, May
  • Summer: June, July, August
  • Autumn: September, October, November
  • Winter: December, January, February

They shared their experiences and observations of each season.

In DT, we focused on hygiene in the kitchen. The children learned the importance of keeping food safe and healthy to eat. Key points included:

  • Handwashing: Always washing hands before handling food.
  • Clean Surfaces: Keeping the cooking area clean to avoid contamination.
  • Washing fruit and vegetables: using cold water.
  • Tying long hair back.
  • Using blue plasters to cover grazes and cuts.

This lesson emphasised the importance of good hygiene practices.

In RE, we discussed how caring for the environment is an important aspect of the Muslim faith. We learned that Muslims believe in protecting the Earth and take actions to preserve natural resources and reduce waste. The children heard the stories of ‘The prophet and the ants’ and ‘The Crying Camel’.

Finally, the children in KS1 had a visit from ‘Spider-man’, they were amazed to see him on our school roof!

Homework this week is the ‘learning postcard’ which needs to be completed and sent back into school by Wednesday. Sharing books will be sent home for over the weekend and reading books with spellings will be given out on Monday.

Have a great weekend – Year 1 team.
