Welcome back to our Year 5 blog! This week, we excelled in Maths, engaged with "Viking Boy" in English, boosted our times tables skills, and investigated water resistance in Science. Music Day was a highlight, with everyone in fantastic costumes enjoying music-themed lessons. Great job, Year 5!
Maths
In our Maths lessons this week we have recapped how to calculate a fraction of a quantity and multiply a mixed number by an integer. We know that to calculate a fraction of an amount when the numerator is greater than one, we must divide by the denominator and multiply by the numerator. The children have shown great resilience when problem solving and applying their knowledge to more complex questions!
English
We have continued to be gripped by our class text this week! We have read chapters 8 and 9 of Viking Boy by Tony Bradman, and we have considered some of the characters' actions. We have made predictions about what may happen next in the story and learnt about referencing evidence from the text to support our answers. In Grammar, we have applied our knowledge from last week about using brackets for parenthesis to place brackets in the correct places within sentences.
Times Tables
Every day we've been practising our times tables and this has helped us become quicker and more confident with our multiplication facts. All that hard work has paid off, as we've been seeing fantastic results on our quizzes. Remember to practise at home where you can! Here are some useful websites:
www.timestables.co.uk This site offers a variety of games and activities to help you learn and practise all the times tables. You can take speed tests, play multiplayer quizzes, and even earn a times tables diploma!
https://www.mathmammoth.com/practice/multiplication?form=MG0AV3 Math Mammoth provides online practice for any combination of multiplication tables. You can choose timed or untimed practice, select the number of problems, and focus on specific tables.
https://www.teachingtables.co.uk This site offers a range of interactive games and teaching tools to help you master your times tables. You can play games like Times Tables Treasure Hunt, Multiplication Wheel, and more.
Science
We have planned and carried out an investigation into water resistance! We predicted that shapes that have a smaller surface area (e.g. a more streamlined shape), would fall faster in water than a shape with a larger surface area, due to it having less water resistance acting upon it and slowing it down. We considered which variables we would need to keep the same in order to ensure a fair test, and we were pleased to discover that our predictions were correct!
Music Day
On Thursday, the whole school had an incredible Music Day where everyone was invited to come into school dressed as their favourite musician or a character from a musical. All of the children's costumes were absolutely fantastic! We had everything from rock stars to iconic Broadway characters, and the creativity and effort put into the outfits really were impressive. Throughout the day, we enjoyed having all of our lessons focused around and filled with music! Thank you, Mrs Jones, for organising this wonderful whole school musical celebration! Take a look at the photographs and see if you can tell who everybody came as!
The children have been amazing this week; have a lovely half term break and a well deserved rest!
