Year 4 Weekly Round-Up
Maths: A Journey into Fractions
This week, we have started a new unit on Fractions. We’ve delved into understanding the whole, partitioning mixed numbers, and using number lines to represent mixed numbers. We focussed on the importance of understanding that a fraction is a whole split into equal parts and if the parts are not equal then it isn't a proper fraction.
English: Stepping into Rhianna's Shoes
In English, the students put on their creative writing hats and wrote diaries from Rhianna’s point of view, focusing on chapters 1 and 2. The emphasis was on using adverbial openers, exploring character feelings, and crafting expanded noun phrases. I was so impressed with the powerful vocabulary that was used to convet Rhianna's emotions. We have looked at verb tenses in more detail and how tenses tell us at which point in time something happens.
History: The Roman Invasion of Britain
History lessons this week have been a thrilling adventure through time. We discussed the Roman invasion of Britain, exploring why the Romans were so successful. Children made insightful comparisons between the Romans and the Celts, enhancing their understanding of these ancient civilisations. They could idenitfy why the Celts struggled to stand up to the mighty Romans.
Science: Classifying Animals
In Science, we continued our exploration of animal classification. The students examined various characteristics of animals, fostering a greater appreciation and understanding of the diversity in the animal kingdom. We focused in ore detail on vertebrates and invertebrates and which animal classifications fall under each category. Some of us were surprised to find out that whales and dolphins are mammals because they give birth to live young and breath through lungs, they cannot breath under water like fish!
Art: A Dive into Still Life
Our new unit in Art has been all about still life. The students explored different artists who use still life in their work and learned about various art movements. They created a double-page spread about Henri Matisse, Roy Lichtenstein, Georgia O'Keeffe and Paul Cezanne and their techniques, allowing their creativity to shine.
Spanish: Learning Parts of the Face
In Spanish, we’ve been focusing on learning how to describe the positions of objects. It’s been wonderful to see the students' enthusiasm as they expand their vocabulary and language skills.
Homework for the Week
This week’s homework is a carousel (revising the learning about the Ancient Greek civilisation), spellings and continued practice of times tables. We encourage all students to dedicate time to these tasks to reinforce their learning from the week. Rapid recall of the timestables is coming along brilliantly, thank you for helping your children practise this, it really is having a big impact on their mathematical understanding!
Thank you for your continued support and involvement in your child’s education. Have a fantastic weekend!
