This week in Year 5 we have been very busy.
In English we have finished our 'Beowulf' book and have wrtten poems in the style of a Kenning. A Kenning is a poem that os set out like a riddle - can you guess whether our Kennings are describing Beowulf or Grendel?
We have now started our poetry unit in English and have looked at the first part of the classic poem 'The Lady of Shalott', which was written in 1832 by Alfred, Lord Tennyson. We identified any unfamiliar vocabulary and discuss the main idea of each stanza, looking at the structure of the poem and identifying the rhyming pattern.
Following on from researching the artist Claude Monet in Art, we analysed one of his paintings 'Floating ice near Vetheuil' painted in 1880. We also looked at how Impressionist paintings consider how light affects what they are painting. We looked at four versions of Monet's 'Haystacks', which he painted at different times of the day and different times of the year, commenting how the amount of light affected the outcome of the paintings.
In History we discussed the beliefs of the Anglo-Saxons. We researched the Pagan religion that they followed and found out that they believed in many gods and goddesses and that nature played a big part in their beliefs.
We have started to look at the properties of materials in Science and discussed that materials may have more than one property e.g. a plastic ruler may be transparent but also flexible. We matched different properties to their definitions and then used this information to group objects in different ways according to their properties. We also started to think about why objects are made from certain materials according to their properties. We discussed questions such as 'Why are our chair made of plastic and not cardboard?' and 'What would happen if our windows were made from wood and not glass?'
Congratulations on winning Class Points this week Y5D. Have a lovely weekend
